BRIEF HISTORY OF VOLTA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, NIGERIA

PRESENTED BY PROFESSOR DURU EARNEST CHIDI

THE FOUNDING PRESIDENT.

Volta University College, was founded by Professor Duru Earnest Chidi, a Clinical Psychologist by profession, and former Regional Staff Counsellor, UNMIK Administration, Mitrovoca Region, former Kosovo, under the 7 Point Agenda, of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Administration; a supra–ministerial and multi-secretarial States of emergency, declared in seven cardinal sectors of Nigerian economy by Mr. President, legislated by the National Assembly, and in accordance with Section 305, Sub-Sections (e)(f) of 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, and in conformity with Articles 55, 56, 57 and 63 of the Charters of the United Nations and Statute of International Court of Justice, in the Millennium Development Goals.

 

It is important to note that NUC had authorized all Nigerian Universities to develop academic programme in the field of HIV/AIDS and in its allied disciplines, after, NUC/UNESCO technical meeting at, NUC headquarters, championed by Dr. Osu Otu, the of the UNESCO office, Abuja and the Executive Secretary, of the National Universities Commission, Professor Julius Okejie, on the 5th May, 2008. This is in compliance with the Presidential Mandate of 2004,designated towards the revitalization of Public Health Care delivery system, to include development of curriculum, in the field of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.

 

In the same line of direction, and compliances, the new Institution has developed a four-year degree programme in the aforementioned field, to include: Mental Health, Drug Abuse Prevention, as opportunistic disorders, in the field of HIV/AIDS studies; to include a scientific procedure known as Standard Operative Procedures in the Treatment Improvement Protocols (SOP-TIP) for People living with AIDS.

 

HIV/AIDS education programme is offered at Degree Programme in this institution.

 

The Administrative Focal Niche of Volta University College has moved from Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, as a result of security lapses at Ugwunagbo Local Government, to the C.C.P.S. near fire service, Aba pending the restoration of peace conducive enough to accommodate Volta University College programmes.

 

To make life safe and conducive for learning in the interest of staff and students of this institution, Board of Trustees have resolved to relocate Volta University College, to Imo State of Nigeria, after this very ceremony. The trustees further resolved to temporarily, locate Volta University College of Education and Legal Studies at the C.C.P.S, (near fire service), Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. The institution commenced its program at Ngwa High School, Abayi, Aba, Abia State, Nigeria, January 2008, and held its 1st Matriculation Ceremony, at the BINEZ HOTEL, on 26th September 2008.

On its road map to Imo State of Nigeria, Njaba Local Government, Orlu Local Government and Mbano Local Government Areas, have been identified for the mounting of various specialized programmes of the institution. On its Road Map, the Institution, would commence Volta University Primary to Secondary School Programmes in 2010; as well Volta Polytechnic, will kick-off early 2010 in Imo State of Nigeria, to accelerate educational development in the area.

 

Volta University College is a certified educational institution, by the Corporate  Affairs Commission, Abuja, and has submitted its guideline, in line with section 11, Decree 9,1993, in Nigeria, to the National Universities Commission, Abuja in full compliance with the minimum standard, established by the Commission for establishment of Universities in Nigeria, since April, 2009. Accordingly, the institution has made formal application to the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB), for posting of prospective applicants with a minimum of 180 and above.
